Oamaru is the most important metropolis in the district of North Otago. It is located on the eastern coast of the South Island of New Zealand . Oamaru is a nice town with a group of well-preserved public and commercial historic buildings. The buildings were built in the 1880s from local limestone. Among the most interesting places of Oamaru are: the Forrester Gallery - an architectural monument from 1882 decorated with Corinthian columns, and the Waitaki District Council - a clock tower from 1903 reaching the height of 28 m. The most interesting features of the history of Oamaru can be found in the North Otago Museum, which holds an exhibition about mining and the uses of the Oamaru limestone. Other interesting places include: the Courthouse built in neo-classicist style in 1883, which serves its purpose up to this day, the interesting New Zealand Loan and the Mercantile Warehouse - a three-storey Victorian warehouse built in 1882 for New Zealand's largest company dealing with cattle and realty. This warehouse could store up to 100 000 bags of grain. In addition to this warehouse, the Harbor and Tyne Streets of Oamaru shelter more than 20 buildings from the 19th century listed on the New Zealand Heritage List. The Public Gardens with lawns, a ponds and flower gardens founded in 1876 are a very popular tourist destinations, too. Nearby Oamaru we can find several interesting hiking trails such as the South Hill Walkway offering magnificent views of the surroundings, and the Graves Walkway – leading along the coast where you can see seals and penguins. Nearby Oamaru spreads the beautiful sandy Bushy Beach and a golf club.
