Nysa is a historic city in southern Poland . It is located in the Upper Silesia, in Opole Voivodeship. At present, it has a population of about 50 000. Nysa attracts visitors due to historic monuments.

About Nysa

Nysa is one of the oldest cities in Silesia. For many centuries it was considered as one of the most important religious centers in Silesia. Among the biggest attractions is the massive brick cathedral from the 15th century which is proud of one of the steepest roofs of the church in Europe . Then there is the bell tower and the bishop's palace from the 17th century, now used as the city museum which presents the pieces of art created by European painters from the 15th to the 19th centuries. Among the major attractions in Nysa is the Minsterberski Gate Tower, church of St. Peter and Paul, the Baroque fountain built in 1701, and the medieval towers Wieze Ziębicka and Wieze Wrocławska. The main historic square, known as the Square, is unfortunately not preserved in its original form because it was destroyed during the Second World War - Only the south side of the square is about its original shape.

Nysa was probably founded in the 10th century. It immediately became the center of the so-called Nysa principality. In 1200 the diocese became a part of Wrocław. From the 17th century Nysa was the residence of the Catholic Bishops. After the thirty years´ war the city was rebuilt into a fortress. With a large number of Baroque and Gothic churches the city is nicknamed "Silesian Rome". After the First World War Nysa became a part of the Prussian province of the Upper Silesia. After the Second World War, when 80% of the city was destroyed, it became a part of Poland .
