Nuernberg (in German: Nürnberg) is a large German city located on the Pegnitz River in Bavaria, 150 km northwest of Munich in Germany .

A castle and a merchant settlement was mentioned on the Nuernberg site around the year 1050. It was granted town privileges in 1200. In the Middle Ages, Nuernberg belonged to one of the two largest trade centers on the trade route from Italy to northern Europe .During the Second World War it was the headquarters of the Nazi NSDAP and that is why the city was almost completely destroyed. Fortunately, after the war, most of the destroyed buildings were restored.

Present Times

Currently, Nuernberg has a population of over 500 thousand. Apart from the history, Nuernberg is also famous for gingerbread making. This tradition dates back to the 13th century.

Historic Sights

The centre of Nuernberg is divided by the river into two parts. The city is surrounded by almost completely preserved city walls. Perhaps the most significant monument is Nuernberg Imperial Castle with a tall tower (Heidenturm) , a Romanesque chapel and the imperial palace. Nuernberg is the birthplace of a significant painter Albrecht Dürer. His memorial can be found in the center of Nuernberg. There is a Gothic town hall which was restored in the Renaissance style. Not far from town you will come across a tower (Laufer Schlangturm) and a gate called Laufer Tor. As for sacral buildings, perhaps the most important are the St. Giles Church, St.Sebald church and Church of Our Lady. There is a special museum in Nuernberg - the Toy Museum. There are several other museums, such the as Natural History Museum, the Germanic National Museum and the Transport Museum with an exhibition of models or original vehicles and transport equipment. In the southern part city of Nuernberg, there is the largest sacral building in Nuernberg, the St.Lawrence Cathedral. In the very heart of the city you can admire several well-preserved old timber-framed houses.
