The Notranjska region, situated in the south-western Slovenia, is considered the most woody area of Slovenia. It is distinctive mainly for the wildlife and karst phenomena. There are karst fields turning into lakes and back to meadows, rivers, that often leave a surface and descend into the underworld, caves and abysses, beatiful castles, spectacular nature and hidden villages. The most sought beauties worth visiting in the Notranjska region are, for example, the famous Postojna Caves and the nearby Pivka and Črna Caves, which belong to the Postojna cave system. Then there is the Unica river with fantastic, rarely visited beaches and wonderful opportunities for fishing, kayaking and canoeing. Animal lovers usually head for the Snežnik regional park or the Javorniki hill to observe forest birds, foxes, rabbits, roes and roe-bucks, deer and hinds, as well as bears. The regional park Rakov Škocjan is also home to wild animals, but known specially for its magnificent karst phenomena - the Great and Small Natural Bridge, which are remains of the collapsed underground tunnel. To go really “in the wild”, you should not miss the area of the Iška river or the natural pools of the Zala river. The most significant cultural and historic sites in this region are the Predjama and Snežnik Castles.
