Nijō Castle is a fort in Japan , in the city of Kyoto . It is the former official residence of the Shogun in Kyoto. Nijō Castle was built in the 17th century and it was a symbol of power. It is a complex of buildings on the area of 275 000 square metres, of which 8000 square metres are built over. The buildings connected by courts and gardens form two circles. The inner fort consists of the foundation of the tower and the Honmaru Palace with a garden. The Ninomaru Palace, the kitchen, the watch-house and the gardens are between the two fortifications. Ninomaru Palace is almost entirely built of cypress wood, decorated with gold and wood carvings. Honmaru Palace is divided into four parts: the residential, the social, the entrance hall and the kitchen. This palace was built in the style of the late Edo era, and is decorated with paintings of famous painters. In the gardens of Nijō Castle is a large lake with three islands and tea pavilions. In 1994, Nijō Castle was added to the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, together with other historical monuments of Kyoto .
