Niepolomice Forest is a large forest area situated about 20 km away from the city of Kraków in Poland . It spreads on an area between the rivers of Vistula and Raba. Since the 13th century, this location was a favourite hunting chase of Polish noble men. Despite having such a big city in its close surroundings, Niepolomice Forest managed to keep its wildness and diversity to this day. The forest is a home to 175 species of birds, European bisons, lynx, wolves and also many varieties of plants.

About Niepolomice Forest

Niepolomice Forest consists of six natural preserves with a total area of 94.43 hectares. Individual preserves protect unique biotopes. Niepolomice Forest is mostly covered by mixed spruce woods but there are even hornbeams that are two hundreds of years old, ancient oak trees and rare varieties of water plants. The very centre of the forest is strictly protected and tourists are forbidden to enter it. It is a home to the heaviest European animals, Polish wisents. These bisons were brought here before the World War II. Niepolomice Forest can be observed in many ways. Four marked tourist trails cross the forest, as well as a cycle track and an educational path. Apart from rare plants also quite a lot of mushrooms grow in the forest which makes it a favourite picking location. A dense net of unmarked paths distributed upright ensures that even the most enthusiastic mushroom pickers will not get lost for a long time.
