Nice is the biggest resort of France riviera. City is situated along Gulf of angels and Alpes foothills. For nice is characteristic the smell of lavenders, sunshine and sea. The history of the city is gone down to Antique period. In 400b.c. there was established the colony Nikaia. About the year 150 b.c. the Romans settled here and the colony exploded to the city. In 1388 the city is become the part of Savoy. In this time the city is called Nizza. In 1860 was Nice added to France. In Nice you find beautiful esplanades and palaces. To the most favourite belongs the Promenade des Anglais. It was built in the 19th century by english inhabitants of the town. The historical centre is lovely with narrow lanes, many restaurants, cafés and shops. Old town is located mostly on La Chateau knoll. On this knoll was built a castle in the 11th century. Few centuries later there was built a new castle and the cathedral of Saint Maria. These buildings were destroyed by Lewis XVI. in the 18th century. There left just the ruines from the castle. Under the castle there are houses from the 17th and 18th century. The houses are complemented with lovely baroque churches. Famous is also Saint James cathedral or Palais Lascaris from the 17th century. Interesting places of the city are the squares Pierre-Gautier and Charles-Felix. Beautiful is also old port surrounded with red buildings from the 18th century. Centre of New Nice is the square Place Masséna. This square was built in 1835. It is decorated with palms and fountains. Very interesting history has also the Cathedrale St Nicolas called Russian church. The church was established on the same place where stood the house of czar Nikolay Aleksandrovich. Other interesting place is palace Masséna surrounded with the park. In the palace there is a museum exposition. The symbol of luxury in Nice is the hotel Négresco. There stayed many important celebrities. City and its amazing surrounding was attracted for many artists. In Nice there lived and worked for example Pablo Picasso or Auguste Renoire.
