Newcastle upon Tyne owes its name to the Norman castle which was founded by the son of William of Conqueror. It is now quite a large city in the United Kingdom which lies in the north part of England (Tyne and Wear), approximately 130 km (81mi) from the city Leeds. Today, the population of the city approximates about 190,000. The ancient city can boast of a long and rich history as the "new castle" was found in the year 1080 already. Anyway, the Romans had bridged the Tyne River and built a fortress on the site a thousand years earlier…During the Industrial Revolution the city developed mainly due to coal mining. That period is obviously connected with the widely known idiom, "carrying or taking coal to Newcastle" describing a foolhardy or pointless action. Obviously the most important monuments, besides the Castle, are the Great North Museum, Earl Grey's Monument, St. Nicholas Cathedral and Tyne Bridge. If you are interested in the culture or art, Laing Art Gallery welcomes you to an exhibition of original artwork. With children, it is convenient to visit the Seven Stories, a valuable collection of children books. Are you attracted to exploring interesting historical sites in the region? Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral are definitely worth the attention.
