New Plymouth is a major centre of the Taranaki Region. It is located in the western part of the North Island, in New Zealand . New Plymouth is the only deep-water port in the area, lying among the surfer's beaches.

About New Plymouth and Surroundings

New Plymouth is a city of many beautiful parks, and it is also the starting point of the journey to the nearby Egmont National Park named after the dominant feature of the region – Mount Egmont.

Pukekura Park and Brooklands Park

Pukekura Park was founded in 1876. It lies 10 minutes from the city centre. The main feature of the park is water. The ponds and streams are surrounded by paths, exotic plants and dense ancestral bush. From Christmas until early February, the park hosts the Feast of Lights when it turns into a realm of colourful lights placed along the paths.
Brooklands Park is an English park near the Pukekura Park. Initially, it was a private property, but in 1934 it was left to the city New Plymouth. The most interesting aspect of the park is a 2,000 years old tree called "drmek puriri". Apart from this rare tree, we can see here up to 300 kinds of rhododendron. The young tourists will surely enjoy the visit of the children's zoo.

Monuments and Museums

As far as historical buildings in New Plymouth are concerned, you should visit the church of the Virgin Mary from 1848 with wonderful stained glass windows. The next building worth visiting is the Richmond Cottage, built in 1853. It served as the seat of several prominent families in the area. New Plymouth is a home to the Taranaki Museum - one of the oldest museum in New Zealand and the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery - the only museum of contemporary art in New Zealand .
