as the New Town. The city was a residence to many Roman emperors. In the 6h century A.D. Naples was seized by the Byzantines and it was declared independent. In 1860, Naples was sieged by Giuseppe Garibaldi and annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. .
Historical centre
The dominating landmark of the city is its historical centre with the main open city square called Piazza del Plebiscite, with Church of San Francesci di Paola (built in the 19th century) and the Royal Palace (built 1730 – 1860) . The other significant monuments are: the Cathedral of Naples , Church of San Domenico (San Domenico Maggiore, built 1283 – 1324) , Gesu Nuovo (1597) , St. Claire convent (1310 – 1340) , the Certosa di San Martino (1368) , Sant´Elmo Castle situated on top of Vomero hill, Castel dell´Ovo , originating from the 7th century B.C., Castel Nuovo (built 1279 - 1282, the dominating building on Piazza del Municipio) , Capuano Castle (built in 1153) and the Capodimonte (royal residence from the 18th century) .Museums and culture
