It was the Venetians who left the most significant traces there and who created a metropolis on the Peloponnese island from this town. In addition, the town differs from other Greek towns in that the houses and other buildings are not constructed in a chaotic way and Nafplio is quite clean and tidy. Among frequently visited and interesting places in Nafplio belong fortresses, which had been built around the town. They are Acronauplia, Palamídi and the Toron Castle, which was also originally a fortress. The Palamídi fortress, which is accessible to public, offers beautiful views upon the whole town of Nafplio and its environs. Another place of interest is the Bourtzi fortress not far away from the port, where you can get by boat for 3 euro. In proximity of the town, there are the remains of the Ancient Mycenae. Nafplio is popular for its market, which takes place on Saturday and you can really find anything there..

Tourist Information

Nafplio offers many accommodation options in modern hotels, suites and in private rooms. The beaches in the town are quite small and mostly stony. South of Nafplio you can find sand beaches which are bigger. One of them is the pretty Karathona Beach. You can get there easily by car or on a scooter, which you can rent in one of the local scooter rentals. Right in Nafplio you will find many local taverns and restaurants or cafés, several discos, an esplanade along the local port and the ever-present Greek hospitality.

Transport

You can get to Nafplio by car or by train. The easiest way is to board a plane to Athens and then set off to Nafplio by car and take the highway no. E65, from which you turn in the direction of the city of Argos. Then it is only 10 km to Nafplio. Taking the train is an interesting experience because the trains on the Peloponnese island use the narrow-gauged railway system, which is different from the other railways in Greece and the rest of Europe . That is why it is necessary to board the train using this railway in Athens at the Stahmos Peloponnisou station.
