About Náchod

Náchod, as well as the Castle Náchod , dates back to the early 13th century. The Castle Náchod was originally a Gothic castle and an important defensive point on the trade route between Prague and Silesia. The trail narrowed into the mountain pass called “a gate”. Through this gate merchants and craftsmen poured to the city, bringing prosperity with them. From the early 14th century Náchod was protected by walls, which were followed by two fortification lines extending to the castle. In this era, Horské and Krajské suburbs were established. The life in Náchod has always been closely connected with the life of the Castle Náchod .

Development of Náchod

The Smiřice family managed Náchod in 1544 – 1621. Under their rule it was a flourishing city. Náchod gained privileges similar to the privileges of royal towns. After the Battle of White Mountain (1621) Náchod estate was confiscated and sold to the Trčkas of Lipá. After the murder of Adam Erdman Trčka , when Albrecht von Wallenstein was murdered in Cheb, Náchod was given to the royal family of Piccolomini. Under their rule the city was forced to recatholicization. The Piccolominis had the Castle Náchod rebuilt and Náchod was rebuilt as well. The first street was paved in 1638, then a Baroque town hall was built in 1663 m and the church of St.Lawrence on the square was rebuilt too. Other, later owners of the city were the Desfours, then Duke Petr of Courland and Zaháňský, and then it was inherited by Princess Kateřina Vilemína Zaháňská. The last owner of Náchod was the German noble family of the Schaumburg-Lippe in 1842-1945.

Industrial Revolution

Náchod began brewing beer in 1873. In 1882 two mechanical weaving factories were built in Náchod. In the early 20th century Náchod was one of the largest cotton centers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; it was sometimes called the "Manchester of the East".

Sights & Culture

Náchod is a natural historical, industrial and administrative center of the area. For its location Náchod is an important tourist junction. Visitors usually want to see the New Renaissance Town Hall, St. John the Baptist and St.Michael's churches, the post office building, Bartoň´s villa designed by the architect Pavel Janák and TG Masaryk Square with the deanery and a number of statues. The Regional Museum of History in Náchod certainly has a lot to offer to tourists. There is a permanent exhibition about the history of Náchod and the region of Náchod. There is the City Theatre and several local galleries. Náchod, in collaboration with other organizations and associations organizes many cultural events throughout the year.

Tourism and Activities

Náchod ´ neighbouring is abundant with hiking trails and bike paths. For example, if you follow the red tourist path, you will get to the Castle Náchod or further to the military cemetery from 1866. If you go on the other side the path will take you to Broumovsko Natural Protected Reserve. There is a cycling trail to Poland-Kudowa Zdroj and back to Náchod. As for sports, Náchod offers a winter stadium with an indoor ice rink, an indoor swimming center, a football pitch, an athletics track, a skate park and tennis courts. In winter you can enjoy two ski lifts in the Běloves suburb. Near Náchod on the Polish side, at the mountain village Karlow, there are well-maintained cross-country trails.
