Muscat is the capital city and a port in Oman . The city is the seat of the sultanate. Muscat is one of the most beautiful cities of the Persian Gulf.

About Muscat

The first mention of the city dates back to the 2nd century AD. Muscat is also called the "sultan's city". The city was created when three municipalities - Muscat, Ruwi and Mutrah were put connected. Muscat is an ancient port city, while Mutrah is rather a residential part with cheaper hotels and a very popular market. Ruwi is a business zone of the city, distinctive with modern buildings. The dominating feature of the city are three forts. The first one is the Mutrah fort, built on the top of the hill which rises above the city. The other two forts - Al Jalali and Mirami - are at the entrance to the city. The two forts are used by the police and by the army so there is no public access. The most popular monuments in the city are the Ali Mosque and the New Mosque, the Sultan Qabuse Palace, the Representative Palace with beautiful gardens. In addition, there are remarkable Arab houses such as Bait Nadir (museum) , Bait Fransa (French Embassy) and Bait Zawawi (U.S. Embassy) . There are narrow, crooked lanes in Muscat, and also three beautiful carved gates. Other popular monuments in the city Muscat are the marine aquarium at the bay, the Medinat Qaboos Museum which presents the history of Oman, and sultan's museum of armed forces which offers expositions of the military history of Oman) . When visiting Muscat, the fish market is a must.
