Munich is a German city at the foothills of the Alps, on the River Isar. It is the capital of Bavaria, and the third largest city of Germany .

Brief History

Munich gained the status of a city in 1175. From 1506, it has been the capital of Bavaria. In the late 18th century, the city experienced a big boom. During the reign of King Ludwig I, Munich became a well-known European centre of arts and sciences. After World War I, National Socialism gained support. This group, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, attempted to carry out the Beer Hall Putsch in 1923. Its aim was to throw down the central government in Berlin . The putsch failed, but Munich became the centre of the movement and Hitler's headquarters. During World War II, the city was greatly damaged. After the American occupation in 1945, Munich was completely rebuilt.
