Tourist information and destination rating

Category: Mountains, Local time: 14:01:52, Altitude: 363m

Mourne Mountains, a popular destination for many visitors to the Down County in Northern Ireland, spread near the coast of the Irish Sea. The granite peaks dominate the view in the area south from Belfast or Downpatrick towards Newcastle. The distinctive landscape offers views of grey granite and purple heather, the slopes are very steep, often changing in sharp cliffs. Anyway, from a distance, they associate a a group of sleeping buffalos. The highest and wildest part of the mountain range is located near Newcastle, but the beautiful cliff of Eagle Mountain is situated towards southwest. The area of Rostrevor offers splendid views of Carlingford Lough, on of the most beautiful lakes in Ireland. Hikers often climb Slieve Donalda and Hare's Gap, as well as Diamond rocks. There are less challenging options for trips or walks in the parks such as Donard Park or Tollymore Forest Park.
