Mount Kazbek (5047 m) is the third highest peak in Georgia
. It rises in the northern part of South Ossetia, at the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains. According to the legend, a Georgian hero named Amirani (an equivalent of the Greek Prometheus) was tied to this mountain for giving people the gift of fire despite the gods prohibition. Mount Kazbek is a popular place for hiking and mountaineering. The starting point for the ascent of the mountain is the village Kazbeg at the altitude of 1700 m. The path leads to a weather station at the altitude of 3800 m. It is possible to get here without equipment, and also to get even further, to the Tsminda Sameba monastery at the height of 4100 m. To continue up to the top of Mount Kazbek it is necessary to have climbing equipment.
