Mount Emei is a mountain in China . It lies in the southern part of the country, near the city Leshan . Mount Emei is one of the four most sacred Buddhist mountains of China . Martial arts has been taught in the surrounding monasteries since the 16th century, and they are considered the places where Chinese boxing was born. The statue of the Leshan Buddha had been carved into the rock massif of Mount Emei, and it is the largest sitting Buddha statue in the world. The 71 m high statue was carved during the Tang Dynasty, from the 7th to the 9th century. Mount Emei, together with the statue of the sitting Buddha, were registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996.
