Montana de Oro State Park is an important recreational area in the western coast of the USA
state, close to the community of Los Osos
. About one million tourists visit the park every year. They come there to enjoy the local sand beaches as well as the wilderness, which offers sharp cliffs, canyons and hills. The highest point is Valencia Peak and it is 411 m high. Montana de Oro State Park was named after the wild gold-coloured flowers, which are in bloom in spring. The park can be freely translated as a "mountain from gold".
About the Park
The most famous beach in the park is Spooner’s Cove, which is not far away from a campsite. A popular experienced surfers´ location is Hazard Reef. Swimming in the local bays is not recommended due to strong and unpredictable currents, but they are a wonderful place to watch dolphins and the South American sea lions. The park area is really vast (32km²) so Montana de Oro State Park is also a popular destination of hikers who prefer less crowded places. You can find remote sea bays, beaches and romantic cliffs there. The local wild nature can be be explored on foot, on bike or on a horse - many trails have been created for these purposes.
