Monsanto is a historical village in Portugal . It is situated in the eastern part of the country, in the region of Castelo Branco, northeast from the town Castelo Branco , on an overhanging rock. Monsanto is a unique ancient fortified rock village. The houses and the buildings in the village were built in between large boulders, so they perfectly blend with the surroundings. Monsanto is interwoven with narrow winding streets. The town is dominated by the ruins of the castle and a church from the 13th century. From the castle, the visitors can see the whole village and its surroundings. The ruins of the Romanesque chapel are also worth seeing. Monsanto currently has about 1 200 inhabitants.
