Mijikenda Kaya are forests located in Kenya and the UNESCO Site. The forests comprise 11 separate forest sites which are spread along a 200km long coast of the Indian Ocean. The Mijikenda Kaya includes remains of fortified villages known as Kayas. The villages were built in the 16th century and were then abandoned in 1940. Ancestors of today´s Mijikenda tribe used to live there. The places are considered as sacred places now. In Mijikenda Kaya you may come across rare plants and animals, especially birds. The forests Mijikenda Kaya were inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008.
