Mexico City, also known as Mexico City, is the capital of Mexico . It is situated in the valley of Mexico, which is a large valley on the top of the plateau in the centre of the country, in the altitude of 2,240 meters. Mexico City, along with its surroundings, has a population of 21.2 millions of people which makes it the largest agglomeration on the western hemisphere.

A Look Into the History

Mexico City was founded in the 16th century by the Spanish on the ruins of a former Aztec city, Tenochtitlan. By the time the first Europeans came here, the estimated population of Tenochtitlan was more than 100,000 people and it was the largest city in the world. In the centre of Tenochtitlan, there were palaces and two pyramides that had temples devoted to gods Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtlim.

The city itself has currently a population of about 8.8 millions of people. There are huge social differences between individual quarters. In the east of the city people live in poverty, they have no jobs, nothing to eat and drink. One of such quarters is Nezahualcóyotl where up to 1.5 millions of people live. The western part is a place of the rich living in luxury homes and welfare. The crime rate is very high, unfortunately. Pick-pockets are very frequent and tourists get kidnapped by taxi drivers who rob them. Many people live in the streets with no food and water in a very filthy environment. Mexico City is therefore a city of great contrasts. The quickest way of transport in the city is to use the underground and the city train. Be very cautious in the underground about pick-pockets.

The historical centre of Mexico City holds remains of five Aztec temples and also several newer sights. The centre is basically a square, Plaza de la Constitución , sometimes called El Zócalo. It is one of the largest squares in the world. The most outstanding building at the square is the Metropolitan Cathedral built on ruins of the largest Aztec temple. This building is said to be the most spacious continental cathedral. The Basilic of Virgin Mary from Guadalupe is an interesting place where Virgin Mary herself was supposed to appear in 1531. Very popular are the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco that were, along with the historical centre of Mexico City , placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in the year of 1987. There is also the Palace of Fine Arts, theatre Teatro de la Ciudad de mexico and Benito Juarez Monument. Torre Latinoamericana is an interesting modern skyscraper that was built in 1956 and it is the oldest building of its kind in the country. Other modern buildings include for example the José Vasconcelos Library from 2006. The Chapultepec Park is a popular relaxing place. Among the most visited museums in Mexico City are the National Museum of Anthropology and Templo Mayor Museum.

Other Curiosities

Mexico City hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1968. Football lovers should not leave out a visit of the stadium Estadio Azteca. It is truly a great experience. The city is also a shopping paradise, nowhere else in the Latin America, except for Sao Paulo , you will find as large choice of luxurious goods as here in Mexico City.
