Memphis was the Egyptian capital city during the Old Kingdom as well as the first capital city of the unified Egypt. Apart from being the residence of pharaohs, it was also the most important port in the country. In the past, the city was considered one of the wonders of the world.
Although nowadays the ancient city of Memphis comprises only ruins, it is a popular tourist destination. Stone sepulchres, mastabas of various kings, pyramids and temples have been preserved. Among the best preserved we can name the Simon Ptah temple, the Merenptah palace and the 4-meter tall alabaster sphinx. The ancient city site of Memphis has been listed among the UNESCO World Heritage since 1979.
