In the 12th century it was donated to the Benedictine Order, who had it enlarged. In the 15th century, Melk Abbey was one of the wealthiest residences owned by the Catholic Church. In 1700 the old tower and monastery buildings were demolished and another building was built (1702 - 1736) . Melk Abbey was designed by architect Prandtauer and it is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in Europe. It is dominated by two Baroque towers. The monastery building is 320 m long. The dome of the monastery church, 64m high, offers breathtaking views of the building and the surroundings. Melk Abbey includes a real Baroque jewel, the Marble Hall, designed for formal audiences. There are other interesting monuments, such as the library with colour wall frescos that shelter over 80 000 books and 20 000 old handwritings, and the basilica with a beautiful dome. During the tourist season Melk Abbey is open to tourists. Tours are available every hour. In April and October the monastery is open until 5 p.m. Melk Abbey is a distinctive yellow- and -white landmark that is definitely worth seeing..
