Melbourne: Reviews

I'm a little biassed but Melbourne is surely the most livable city on the planet. Fabulous bars and cafe's, beautiful parks and the Yarra river meandering through the city centre. The sports centre is within walking distance including the famous MCG & Rod Laver Arena. The bay is just a short tram ride away & jump in the car & tour the faboulous wineries of the Yarra Valley.

Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia and the southernmost metropolis in the world. It is located on the banks of the Yarra River, along the bay known as Port Phillip. Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria.

History

The city was founded in 1834 by a group of former prisoners, led by John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner. It was named after the British Prime Minister, Lord W. Lamb, the Viscount of Melbourne. In the middle of the 19th century, gold was discovered in the region, and due to the golden rush Melbourne was quickly developing. During the period 1901 to 1927, Melbourne was the capital of Australia. In 1956, the Olympic Games took place in Melbourne.

Garden City

Melbourne is nicknamed Australia´s Garden City for abundant gardens and parks.

Skyscraper City

The present Melbourne is the skyscraper city, too. The highest skyscraper is named the Rialto Tower. The observation deck on the 55th floor offers splendid views of the city. The Yarra River divides the city in two parts which are connected with the oldest Australian bridge, Princess Bridge, built in 1888.

Culture and sport

Every year, Melbourne is the venue of various cultural and sports events. Among the best-known, there are, for example, the Melbourne Cup (horse race) , the Australian Tennis Open, the Australian Football League Grand Final and the Australian Formula One Grand Prix. Other interesting tourist destinations in Melbourne are, for example, the National Gallery with a permanent exposition of aboriginal art, the botanical gardens (Royal Botanic Garden) , the Olympic Park and the Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary.
