Mecca, also City of Makkah or Makkat Al Mukarramah, is a very significant city in Saudi Arabia. It is located in the southwest of the country in the Makkah region, about 80 km west of the Red Sea. The city has a population of approximately 1.7 million. Mecca is considered the holiest city in Islam.

Glances into History

Mecca was founded at the crossroads of trade routes in the area called Hidjaz. The prophet Mohammed, the founder of Islam, was born in Mecca in the year 571, and in 622 he left to Medina to disseminate the religion.

Great Mosque

In the center of the city Mecca, there is the largest religious building in the world, the mosque of Masjid al-Haram (The Great Mosque) . The mosque comprises seven minarets. The central part of the mosque, the Kaaba, is the the holiest place. There is a stone shrine. It is composed of stone blocks on a marble pedestal. The shrine is 15 meters high, 12 m long and 10 m wide. There is the Black Stone in the eastern wall of Kaaba at the height of 1.5 m, and the stone is the holiest Islamic artifact. Every year, during the Islamic month, there are millions of Muslims coming to Mecca and to the Black Stone. According to the legend, it was Adam who built Kaaba after he was expelled from the Paradise. Kaaba was taken to heaven before the great floods, and it was rebuilt again by the prophet Ibrahim. The area around the mosque is called the Old Town. Houses that had been close to the Mosque were pulled down in order to create free space and a wide streets. The Mosque is not a tourist attraction but the holy place so non-Moslims are prohibited from entering the city.
