According to a legend the Masjid al-Haram was built by angels, before the mankind was created. However, the Islam says that it was built by Abraham and his son Ishmael. The first reconstruction recorded in writing was carried out in 692AD. In 1399 the mosque was destroyed by fire and heavy rain. Then, during the following centuries, the mosque was remodelled and developed several times. The present Masjid al-Haram is a modern complex of buildings with heated floors, air conditioning and escalators. The latest innovation within the complex of the mosque is a monumental gate of King Fahd, decorated with gray and white marble. It comprises three arches with carved decorations of white marble.
The Masjid al-Haram is the only mosque in the world that does indicate the direction in which the Muslims say prayers. They are turned towards the Kaaba, which is in the center of the mosque square.
