Transport
Mariefred is best accessible by ship that regularly leaves from Stockholm . The ships anchor at the port quay Klara Mälarstrand, not far from Stadshuset on Kungsholmen. You can buy the ticket directly on the board or at the information center in Rådhuset (you will receive a free map on your arrival and you can rent a bike for 85 SEK per day there) . The return ticket costs 180 SEK. The one-way voyage takes about 3.5 hours. You can also get there by train from Stockholm- at first to Läggesta and then by bus to Mariefred. In summer, you can also travel to Läggesta by a special narrow-gauged steam train.About Mariefred
Mariefred jis a beautiful picturesque village. There are charming narrow streets, boutiques and small squares interlaced by well-preserved wooden houses. The name of the village Mariefred is derived from the ancient monastery Pax Mariae, which means “Maria's peace“. Apart from the castle, you can also visit the railroad museum that is situated in the 3-km far Läggesta . You can see a large exhibition featuring old machines and the equipment of workshops there. The Gripsholm Castle is one of the most significant Swedish monuments. It was built in the 16th century. Later, it became a prison and today, it presents the National Portrait Collection featuring portraits of the most famous Swedes. Mälaren Lake
Another attraction of Mariefred is Mälaren Lake. It is the third largest lake in Sweden and it is a popular recreation area. As for accommodation, the only hotel in Mariefred is the Gripsholms Värdhus Hotel on street Kyrkogatan 1. There is also a cheaper alternative- at the hostel right behind the castle, in the educational center of the Red Cross, for about 200 – 400 SEK per night. Other interesting place to sleep is at one of the six-bed cottages that you can rent at the local information center for 550 SEK per night.
