It was the stronghold of the native tribe Tagalog, who named the fort Maynila. In 1571, Manila was conquered by the Spanish, and consequently became the administrative centre of the Philippines. Between 1762-1764, Manila was under British rule. A national uprising against the Spanish took a place in 1898, and subsequently the independence from Spain was proclaimed. At the end of 1898, Manila was conquered by the American army, therefore the next year the Philippine–American War started. In 1902 the Philippines was declared an American colony, and since 1934 it became its associated state. During the Second World War, Manila was a part of Japan. Manila offers many places of interest and historical monuments. The city is divided into two parts by the river Pasig. Five stone bridges have been built over the river, these are: Ayla, Del Pan, Johns, Makartur and Quezon. On the left bank of the river stands the well-preserved fortress Santiago surrounded by massive Spanish fortifications. The fortress has been serving military purposes until these days, that is the reason why it is closed to the public. In this city, we can find a number of other monuments, such as the University of Santo Tomas (Saint Thomas) , the Roman Catholic cathedral, the memorial to Spanish sailors and the Apolinario Mabini Shrine. Apart from the monuments, the city of Manila also has a museum. On the banks of the river stands the Malacanian Palace, it is today the seat of the president. On the bank of Manila Bay, the Luneta Park with a monument of José Rizal can be seen.
