Manchester is an important historic city in the north-eastern part of England , in the region Hartford . It is listed on the World Heritage List UNESCO and is often considered the second city of England .

Basic information

The city Manchester is located in a region of a large network of canals and mills, which was built during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. Manchester is also well known for its football clubs.

A little bit of history

The oldest settlement in the area dates back to the Celtic era. The city further developed during the Roman rule when a fortified camp was built there. The founding of the city dates back to the 13th century. In the Middle Ages, Manchester was an important center of crafts and trade. The city's greatest boom came in the 18th and 19th century, when the first factories processing cotton were built. Manchester played a major role in the Industrial Revolution in England .
