The locality is first mentioned in 1247 as a ferry on the Maros River. Mako was damaged (and restored) several times in the period of Turkish occupation. Since 1730 the city has been greatly developing as an agricultural, transport and cultural centre of the region.
At present, Mako is a popular tourist destination, in particular because of the thermal spa resort named Mako Furdo .The quality of the water and the peat in this spa is often compared to the conditions in the Dead Sea. The most significant buildings in the city are: the renovated synagogue, St. Stephen Church, the City Court and the old Police building. The city of Mako is known as an organizer of several regular cultural events and festivals.
