Makarska is an important Croatian holiday resort on the coast of of the Adriatic Sea. It is located in the Central Dalmatia. The population is over 13 000. The historical centre of Makarska is a nice example of original architecture and urbanism. The history of Makarska is connected with the Turkish expansion to the Balkans. When the Turkish troops seized the south-eastern Europe, Makarska became for 200 years their important base. They built an important port, which contributed to development of the area. Today´s Makarska is well-known for beautiful beaches and pleasant atmosphere. The beaches of Makarska Riviera are visited by tourists from the whole world. During their stay, they can also visit the Malakological Museum in Makarska with collections of molluscoids and shells, and they can walk along the coastal promenade or visit some of many cafés and restaurants.
