The Macha´s Lake is the largest body of water in the north of the Czech Republic . The Macha´s Lake is called a lake but it is actually a pond, the largest pond in the Czech Republic . It was established by king Charles IV already in 1366. Today it is a popular recreational destination.

The Legend of the Mácha´s Lake

The legend says that one day, Charles IV went hunting in the local woods. He and his men saw a beautiful deer and went after it. But they lost the deer in a swamp. The king was disappointed and dirty and he thought it would be pleasant to bathe in that area. So he ordered that a pond is dug there.

About the Mácha´s Lake

The Macha´s Lake´s surface is 278 ha and there are four beaches, which offer recreation in the summer months to thousands of visitors. There are several beach and water activities, including boat trips and a big slide. Many local legends about the islands - Myší (of Mice) and Kachní (of Ducks) are being told. But entering the islands is forbidden because they are important ornithological areas. The Macha´s Lake is located in beautiful and romantic woods with so many hiking trails. The dominant feature is the nearby castle Bezděz .
