The Maasai Mara National Reserve was proclaimed in 1977, when animal hunt was completely prohibited. The number of the local animals hugely decreased during colonization. The Maasai people who had been living in this land for centuries got a permission to stay. The most common type of vegetation is the savanna, and the only green areas can be found along the Mara River. However, this is not true during the periods of heavy rainfall, when the whole region turns green. The most common animals we can see are lions, cheetahs, zebras, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhinos. Despite the prohibition of hunting, there are huge problems with poaching in this area, what further threatens the already dwindling number of animals. Travelers recommend to visit the Maasai Mara National Reserve during the dry seasons, what means from July until September and from December to February. The yearly average temperature is around 17°C, but exceptionally it can rise up to 25°C. It does not fall below 10°C. Visitors can get to the Maasai Mara National Reserve by a local bus or by car from the 260 km away Nairobi on the road Ganda. The local tourist offices can provide accommodation in the Maasai-style villages, safari rides in jeeps and ballooning, too..
