It was exactly in the year of 43. The city was called Lungdunum by then and it was a civic centre of the whole Gaul. The Burgunds then ruled over the city in the 5th century and the Arabs in the 8th century. In 1032, the city fell within the Roman Empire. During the era of Renaissance, the city blossomed significantly — especially thanks to the silk trade. A massive violence against the Huguenots took place in Lyon in 1572. During the French Revolution, Lyon supported the Girondins which in turn led to a two-month siege of the city and many important buildings were damaged. Lyon evolved into a significant industrial city in the 19th century and keeps this status since. It is a known centre of culture, education and gastronomy. .

Lyon holds a lot of historical and architectural sights. The most important ones include the basilica of Notre Dame de Fourvière, Saint Jean’s Cathedral and a romanesque church of Saint Martin d’Ainay. Notre Dame de Fourvière is one of the most outstanding buildings in Lyon and was built in 1896. Its architecture was inspired by romanesque and Byzantine styles which was untypical for this era. The basilica has four towers and a bell tower with a golden statue of Virgin Mary on its top. The square of Bellecour is very interesting for being surrounded by historical buildings and also for its remarkable contrast of a statue of Louis XIV. and a Russian wheel in the background. The most popular ones include Fête des lumières also known as the Feast of Lights, Nuits de Fourvière and Biennale d'art contemporain. All of them happen every year in June and August.
