Lourdes is an important Christian pilgrimage site located in southwestern France. It is famous due to the apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1858, which was seen by a fourteen-year-old girl Bernadette Soubirous. City Lourdes
The calm, spiritual atmosphere in the surroundings of the cave contrasts with the lively commercial life in the city Lourdes. Most of the shops in the town Lourdes sell holy water offered in a variety of souvenirs, statuettes of Bernardett and many other souvenirs. The worshippers from all over France gather in Lourdes in mid-August. There are lots of interesting places to explore in Lourdes, for example the fortress, which is now used by the Pyrenean Museum; the Lourdes Botanical Garden, which presents the main alpine flora; and the St. Bernardett´s church on the right bank of the Pau River. The church was built in 1988 and its capacity is up to 5,000 worshippers. It is interesting that the interior space of the church can be enlarged or reduced by using movable walls.Tourist information
