Lisbon is the capital and largest city in Portugal . It is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is also the westernmost European capital.

Interesting facts about Lisbon

The city is lies on seven hills on the right bank of the Tejo River. There is a bridge called Vasco de Gama across the river, which is the longest bridge in Europe with the length of 17.5 km.

Historical development of the city

Lisbon has a rich history. The area has been inhabited by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Moors. In 1147, it was conquered by the first Portuguese king Alfonso Henriques. During the 15th and the 16th century, Lisbon was the richest port in Europe. It was in this time that the Trade Square, which has survived up to these days, was built. In 1755, the city was heavily damaged by a big earthquake. Marquess of Pombal was in the head of the city's reconstruction.

Monuments

The most significant monument in Lisbon is the Moor Castle of Sao Jorge. There is a beautiful view of the whole city from the castle. Below the castle, there is the medieval Moor quarter Alfama. The city is dominated by the Pantheon Temple. The construction of this temple took more than 300 years. The Jerónimus Monastery was built in commemoration of the expedition of the explorer Vasco de Gama to India .He is also buried in it. The monastery survived the earthquake in 1755 and is a World Heritage Site UNESCO today. Other interesting buildings include the cathedral Sé Partriarcal or the church Igreja de SantoAntónio de Sé. The symbols of Lisbon are the tower Torre de Belém, which is probably the most photographed site in Portugal , and the Christ the King Statue. It is 110 m high and there is a view terrace at the altitude of 82 m. You can also visit the museum Nacional de Azulejo in Lisbon. "Azulejo" is a term for hand-made painted blue-white tiles that are an important part of Portuguese national art.
