Also known by its Celtic name as Lindisfarne, Holy Island is accessible only at low tide, twice a day, by a three mile long causeway (1954). Holy Island was one of the main centres of Christianity during the Dark Ages, and it is connected with the names of St Aidan and St Cuthbert . The former Celtic monastery was ruined and the only remnants you can see there now are the vaults of LIndisfarne Priory (11th cent.). The island in the North Sea lies thousands of kilometres from larger cities, far from modern technologies, in the open ocean. It is approx. 2.6 km / 1.6mi wide and 9 km / 6mi long. The island has a permanent population, there are a few towns and villages, the best-known town is called Holy Island. Connection by air is provided from Newcastle Airport (NCL).
