Liége is a city in Belgium. It is situated in the eastern part of the country,in the Wallonia Region, in the valley of the Meuse River, near the border with the Netherlands and Germany. The history of this territory goes back to the period of the Roman Empire. The first mention of the settlement is dated 705. At that time the bishops office was moved to Liége. Between 980 and 1795 Liége became the prince bishops. From 1815 to 1830 the town was included in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. Since 1830 Liége has been a part of Belgium. The dominating feature of the town is the stairway near the square called Place du Marché, built in the 17th century. There are other important monuments, for example, St. Paul´s Cathedral with St.Lambert´s treasure, St. Bartholomew´s Church (turn of 11th - 12th century) , Statue of Charlemagne in the centre of the town, St. Martin´s Church, medieval Church of Saint - James (Saint-Jacques) , and the stairway Montagne de Bueren from the Hors Chateau to the Citadel and to the railway station Liége –Guillemins. In addition, there is the Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art,the Museum of Walloon Life and the Curtius Museum, built between 1597 and 1610. You may come across beautiful parks and boulevards along the Meuse River. At present, the population of Liége is about 190 000.
