History of the City of Liberec

The history of this area is rich and long. Liberec was built on the old trade route. Travelling acroes the mountain ridge Jested difficult, the traders needed some place to relax, so they founded a new settlement. The first report of this small market village is from 1352.

The settlement gradually developed and in 1577 during the reign of the Emperor Rudolf II. it became a small town. At the time there were more important cities than Liberec, for example Hradek nad Nisou or Frydlant . Nevertheless Liberec gradually became one of the regional centers. After the Battle of White Mountain 1620 Albrecht of Wallenstein, a famous commander, became an owner of the towns Frýdlant and Liberec and their surroundings. Liberec was a place where cloth for Albrecht´s army was produced.

It was an important moment of the textile tradition of the city. At the beginning of the 19th century during the industrial revolution Liberec became an important textile center. About 50 textile factories and 60 more factories of the metal industry were important for further development of Liberec. For example cars RAF were produced there . Liberec became the second largest city in the country next to Prague. New schools and representative buildings were built. Three consulates resided there and in 1859 the city acquired rail links Pardubice - Liberec and Liberec - Zittau .

At the end of the 19 century a new town hall and a theater were built. Liberec was a city where the bulk of the population was German at that time. Absolutely amazing development of the city was stopped by the First World War. In the outskirts of Liberec a big camp for more than forty thousands of Russian and Italian prisoners of war was formed.

After the end of the First World War Liberec became a part of the newly established Czechoslovak Republic. In the town were ethnic problems. Czech officials government employees railroad workers and Czech companies came to Liberec. The German people did not want to live in the Czechoslovak state and the province of Deutschböhmen with its own government was declared.

Liberec became for a short time the capital of the province. The area was soon occupied by the Czechoslovak army and the nationalist activities were reduced, but not for long. As far as 1935 the Sudetendeutsche Partei led by Konrad Henlein won the election in Liberec. In 1938 on the basis of the Munich Agreement, the Czechoslovak border and Liberec were occupied by the army of Nazi Germany. The czech population was expelled from the border to the inland.

After the Second World War there was a redeployment of the German population to Germany and the importance of Liberec decreased a lot. In 1948 the Communist Party got into political power in Czechoslovakia, private business, personal freedom was suppressed and development of Liberec was slowed down. 1968 was an important but sad time for Liberec and its citizens as 9 inhibitants of Liberec were killed by the occupation armies of the Warsaw Pact during the suppression of the Prague Spring.

In 1989 the Communist regime collapsed in Czechoslovakia. The structure of the local industry began to change in the connection of the integration into the European economy. Some new industrial and commercial zones were founded. Nowadays Liberec is one of the most important cities of the Czech Republic. One of the typical things of the city of Liberec are rhododendrons and their typical smell and coloures whitch attract people in the blassem time, in May and June.
