Leuven Botanical Garden was founded in 1738 in order to meet the needs of medical students at the Catholic University of Leuven. However, in a short time the garden premises were too small so in 1819 a new botanical garden was established. It was located at the premises of a ruined Capuchin monastery. Since 1835, the Leuven Botanical Garden has been the property of the city Leuven .
During the 20th century the garden was remodelled and extended. A new tropical greenhouse was established as well as a water garden and terrace gardens. More than 800 new trees and other plants were installed.
The Leuven Botanical Garden is open around the year, in winter till 5 pm., in summer until 8 pm. Admission is free.
