Legnica is a Polish historic city in the south-western part of the country, in Silesia. Legnica attracts visitors especially due to its historic centre. At present, it has about 105, 000 inhabitants.

About the city

Legnica was the capital city of the voivodeship from June 1st 1975 to December 31st 1998. Since 1992, it is the main centre of the diocese Legnica. It was founded somewhere in the 10th century. Today, it is an important academic city. There are 7 universities, which are included in the regional academic centre, with more than 16, 000 students.

Places of interest

Among the most important monuments of the city Legnica, there is the partially preserved castle . It is one of the oldest stone castles in Poland . Another interesting building is the baroque Church of St John or the Church of St Peter and Paul, which can boast the oldest metal baptistery in the country. The Church of St Mary belongs to oldest churches in Silesia and the former town hall and historic houses in the centre are worth visiting as well. Some of them have beautiful and richly decorated facades. In the city, you can also visit the Museum of Copper and two tourist trails that will lead you through the most interesting parts of the historic centre. The main square of the city is called Rynek, and the main pedestrian street is called Najświętszej Marii Panny. The rest of the city is featureless and rather uninteresting. The discovery of copper deposits after the Second World War played an important role in the city’s development. It revived and became an important industrial centre. Despite its industrial character, Legnica is known for its many parks and gardens - there is more than 700 hectares of green areas.
