Le Morne is a cultural landscape located on the Le Morne peninsula on the southwestern tip of the island of Mauritius . The landscape covers an area of 12 hectares. The rock became a refuge for runaway slaves in the 18th – 19th century. They built small settlements inside the caves. The Le Morne is a symbol of their fight for freedom. The cultural landscape is also one of the last three places where the rarest plants in the world, mandrinette, grow. Another rare plant that grows only on the rocks is trochetia boutoniana. The cultural landscape was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008..
