It was gradually filled with water from the glacier. Lake Vänern covers an area of 5,650 km2. It is 140 km long and 80 km wide. The average depth of Lake Vänern is 27 m, while its maximum depth is 106 m. The lake is a reservoir for drinking water in Sweden . The shore of the lake is rugged and it reaches a length of 2000 km. There are a lot of islands on the lake. The largest islands are Torsö, Kållandsö and Hammarö. There is the monastery called Lurö built on the island of Husön and the Djurö National Park on the island of Djurö. Lake Vänern is supplied with water from the river Klarälven. We can find here approximately 34 kinds of fish and several species of rare birds, such as black-throated divers and caspian terns. The lake also has a permanent water transport. It is an important link between Gothenburg and Stockholm . In winter, from December to January Lake Vänern is frozen, but the ice is not strong enough.
