The Ksiaz Castle is located on a rock cliff not far from the city Wałbrzych . It is one of the largest castles in Poland . It is opened all year round and many cultural events are organized there.

The Ksiaz Castle includes the Walbrzych Art Gallery and hosts a number of events, such as the International Festival of Chamber Music and the Festival of Flowers. Various symposiums, fairs, exhibitions and balls are regularly held there.

A little bit of history

The castle was founded between 1288 and 1292 by duke Bolek I "the Cruel". Its purpose was to guard important trade routes from Bohemia to Silesia. During the Hussite Wars, the castle was conquered and partly destroyed by the Hussites. It was fully reconstructed in the 90s of the 18th century on the orders of Jan Henryk VI von Hochberg. The last changes in the castle's appearance came in 1908-23. The Second World War was meant a disaster for the castle. In 1941, it was occupied by the Nazis. All valuable art pieces, furniture and the contents of the castle's library were taken away. Many underground passages were created below the castle, which suggests that it might have been one of the potential future residences of the German dictator Adolf Hitler. Seismic events have been recently recorded in those spaces.

The Ksiaz Castle has more than 400 rooms and covers the area of 15 hectares. One of the most beautiful rooms in the whole castle is the Maxmilian's chamber from the 18th century. The castle's stable serves for breeding of the world-famous studhorses of Silesian type.

Castle park and terraces

The Ksiaz Castle is located in the Ksiaz Nature Reserve. It is surrounded by a park that covers about 300 hectares and it is a dendrologic reserve. The castle is decorated by terraces with roses, water fountains and cascades. You can see thousands of blooming azaleas and rhododendrons there in spring.

Palm greenhouse

Flowers for decorating the castle's interiors are grown near the castle, in the Lubiechowski palm greenhouse. Ksiaz Castle is a part of the so-called Piast Castles Trail.
