Kraljevo is a city in the central part of Serbia . It is situated on the banks of the Ibar River, 7 km west of the confluence with the West Morava River. Kraljevo is surrounded by the mountain ranges Troglav, Kotlenik and Stolovi, about 160 km south of the capital city Belgrade .

Historical development of the city

The area of the confluence of the rivers near Kraljevo has been inhabited since the pre-historic era. The first written records of the city come from 1476. Kraljevo used to be called Rudopolje or Karanovac. The region played an important role in the forming of the independent state of Serbia as it was the country's religious center. The founder of Serbian statehood, Stefan Nemanja, built many monasteries in the area, which are the treasures of Serbian culture and history today.
In the middle of the 15th century, Serbia got under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, which kept its influence in the area until the 19th century. The city's importance grew after 1718, when the Treaty of Passarowitz was signed between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg Monarchy. The city became a part of the border of the Habsburg Monarchy, which led along the west bank of the West Morava River. The Turkish reign in the rest of Serbia came to an end in the 19th century after the First and Second Serbian Uprising.
The geographical location and the new administrative system contributed to further development of the city. On the occasion of the visit of King Milan Obrenovič, Karanovac was renamed Kraljevo on 19 April 1882. After the First World War, the city saw a fast industrial growth. However, it was interrupted by the Nazi occupation in 1941. Murders, mass executions and plundering of industrial enterprises finally ceased in 1944 with the liberation of the city. After the Second World War, the city's industry, economy and education system began to bloom again. Today's Kraljevo is a modern city with a great potential.
Kraljevo is the administrative center of the region Raška . The city administrates several surrounding towns. In 1991, during the Balkan Wars, the city became the destination of refugees from Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina . Kraljevo has about 100,000 inhabitants.
