Konstanz is the largest city by Lake Constance. It is located on the German -Swiss border. It has a population of 80,000 people. Konstanz is ideal for your free time and holiday.

The city was colonised by the Celts and Romans. In 590, it was a residence of the Alemanni and a bishopric was founded. Konstanz gained city rights in 1215. Between 1548 and 1805, the city was under the rule of Austria. During the 16th Council of Constance, a famous Czech church reformer Jan Hus was sentenced to death and burned at the stake.

Historical Sights

The centre of Konstanz is historical. There are many Gothic houses. A house called The Council used to be a place of meeting of cardinals’ conclave. The Lake Hotel, rebuilt from a monastery, is located on the Lake Island. A gate called Rheintorturm is situated near a bridge across the river, and close to Rheintorturm you will find a tower called Pulverturm. Among other sights, you can visit the Church of Jesus, Saint Stephen Church or Virgin Mary Church, originally a Romanesque basilica, in which Jan Hus was tried. A theatre or Jan Hus monument are also in Konstanz. A town hall in Renaissance style is situated north of the monument. The Hus Stone indicating the place where he was burnt is situated near the border with Switzerland .
