Konin is a city on the banks of the Warta River. It is situated in the central part of Poland , in the Greater Poland Voivodeship. Konin is attractive for tourists due to significant historical monuments. At present, it has a population of approximately 80,000.

Konin is an excellent starting point if you want to get to know important and interesting localities in the surroundings, such as Licheń Basilica , the second most frequently visited place of pilgrimage in Poland, which is 15 km far from Konin. Even today you can find trace of various ethnic groups in the city Konin as Jewish, German, French, Czech and Swiss communities used to live in this locality. The city is situated on the "Scottish Trail", which is a line that connects cities in Poland with Scottish minorities. Konin includes and old and a new part. The old, historic Konin offers a great variety of monuments while the new part of the city is characterized by prefab development.

Brief history

The locality of today´s Konin was inhabited in the Paleolithic era already. The oldest archaeological findings date back to the period of 9000 - 8000 B.C. Anyway, the beginnings of permanent settlements were connected with the Amber Route, leading from the Roman Empire to the Baltic Sea. Konin was founded sometime in the 10th century A.D. It was granted town privileges in 1284.
