Klaipeda is the third biggest Lithuanian city. It is located on the coast of Baltic Sea and so it is the only one Lithuanian seaport. City is situated by the estuary of Niemen to Baltic. It was established by Teutonic Knights in 1252 and was named Memel. In this time there was also built the same called castle Memel. Klaipeda received the city rights in 1254. From 1422 till 1919 the city was the part of Prussia. In the 15th and 16th century the city was important business centre and the port. In 1629 and 1635 the city was attacked, destroyed and occupied by Sweden. In 1919 after the Treaty of Versailles was the area around the city separated from the Germany and it was occupied by French. In 1923 the city got the lithuanian troops. In 1939 Klaipeda became the part of German Empire. The Germans built there submarine base and a big amount of the city was rebuilt. In 1945 the city was given back under the Republic of Lithuania. Historical part of Klaipeda, so called Old town, is made from paved roads line with houses suggestive of german towns.
