Khara-Khoto (Hēichéng) , literally the "Black City", is a medieval city in China
. It is situated in the northern part of the country, in Ejin khoshuu province. It lies near the lake Juyan, close to the borders with Mongolia
. Khara-Khoto was founded in 1032. By the 11th century, it became a thriving commercial center of the nation Tangut. In 1227, the fortress was conquered by Genghis Khan, however the city kept prospering under the dominion of the Mongols. In 1372, the city was conquered by the Chinese army of the Ming Dynasty. The whole city of Khara-Khoto was massacred and left abandoned. In 1908, the ruins of Khara-Khoto were unearthed by a Russian explorer Pyotr Kuzmich Kozlov. More than 2000 books in Tanghut language were discovered there. The 9 m high walls and the outer walls were also preserved.
