The chalet Wachenfeld in the altitude of 1000 m was occupied by the Nazis in the 20s of the 20th century. Hitler reputedly wrote his book Mein Kampf there. The central building of the Kehlsteinhaus was situated near the top of Kehlstein Mountain in the altitude of 1834 m. The chalet was rebuilt into a mountain hotel, accessible on the road with a number of tunnels, which connected it with Obersalzberg. The entrances to the hotel were provided with lifts that were built inside the mountain. Kehlsteinhaus was commissioned by Martin Bormann, Hitler’s secretary, for the occasion of the "Fuehrer’s" 50th birthday. The chalet is called Kehlstein Teehaus, Kehlsteinhaus or Kehlalm. The whole area was bombarded by the Allies at the end of the World War II but the Kehlsteinhaus itself was not destroyed. Only fractions of the complex that originally stretched from the mountain’s foothill have survived up to now but the hotel on top of Kehlstein still works as a tourist attraction today. There is a small museum with an exhibition concerning the Kehlsteinhaus’s history. New hotels have been built throughout the area of the former complex..
Practical information
If you are planning to visit Kehlsteinhaus, you will need at least a half day for this trip. You have to park your vehicle at one of the three car-parks above the city, which is, especially during the main season, rather difficult. From there, you can reach the Hitler’s nest either on foot, following a steep path through woods, or by a regular bus. You can buy the bus ticket directly at the car-park for 13 EUR. Before paying, be sure to ask (at the ticket office) when your bus leaves because sometimes it takes even 2 hours to get into the bus that will take you to the top of Kehlsteinhaus. There are only 5 buses, which is not enough for the crowds of incoming tourists. When you reach the top of Kehlsteinhaus, a truly beautiful view of Alps will open in front of you, and you can enjoy it as well from the hotel’s restaurant.Tourist information and destination rating
